54Don't miss Steps, coming November 20th, only on Netflix. Brooks Brothers. From the first day to graduation. From the interview to the big promotion. From the first day to graduation. From the interview to the big promotion. From the first date to saying I do. Quality tailoring that lasts a lifetime. The 1818 Collection. Italian crafted suiting for your important occasions. Explorer Suit Separates. Crafted from lightweight wool built for travel and ease. Brooks Brothers. Tailored for the moments that matter. Welcome back to Fit Versus History. Horatio Gould joins me. This is part four of the now five part Starlin series. Extended. We had to extend it. It's an extender! The penis enlarger of this series.

52We've had to pump it up. We got so horny talking about Leon Trotsky being assassinated, Alain Widdicombe. Yeah. By a guy with a nacho hat. And somehow the Falklands came into it. It was a bit of a daze. Yeah, it did. And then we're talking about Israel and Argentina versus Britain and Hamas as a united front. No, we did not say that we were united with Hamas. Well, Hamas actually. Yes, Britain, now allied with Hamas, will be taking back the Falklands from Argentina and Israel. Actually, sorry, I'm going to have to send this to you, Charlie, because this is quite funny. Can you put this up on the screen? That's the future liberals won. So talk me through that image there. Right, so this is a response to Ben-Gavir

38calling on Netanyahu to recognise the Falklands. And then in response, King Charles has now uh joined Hamas so that's King Charles as a Hamas fighter that's a British red coat with a Union Jack and the Palestine flag yeah so now the British right yeah have joined it's opposite day wow Argentina and Israel versus Britain and Gaza so hang on so now the get the badge in lot yes are now now free Palestine yeah that's the badge now free Falklands free Palestine it's the same one struggle we've been saying on tour because we were talking Jeremy my support we were saying what's the funniest thing to end on because this was around we were doing shows around the whole Macklemore Ed Sheeran debacle in your show or his set in his set during my show because I was around, this was when we were doing shows around the whole Macklemore, Ed Sheeran debacle. In your show or his set?

26In his set during my show, because I was introducing him by talking about the Macklemore thing. We were saying the best thing to say as you leave the stage is stop the boats, free Palestine, as you leave, in one go. So the audience are like, whoa, I don't know which way to think about that. Which boats? But that, stop the boats, free Palestine, that's it. That's what it looks like in an image. King Charles has joined Hamas. Well, look, that's Finn versus the near future. This is Finn versus history. I mean, this is a huge episode. I don't really know how we've talked about the Falklands for so long. When it's Stalin during World War II. We've had to extend the series because this is too meaty.

09And listen, we will do Barbarossa and Stalingrad as their own blow-by-blow accounts. Blow-by-blow. Glug-by-glug. Greedily gobbling it up, but we have to go through it. You'd all deserve it it where did we get to because I feel we did we veered off the history we got to Prince Andrew 9-11 in the Falklands is where we got to as an exact result of the Ben-Gavir-Milliband Pact yeah so but back in the real world not my fantasy yeah stalin has and widdicombe trotsky in mexico yeah um uh because it doesn't matter though because it's a one and done one and done yeah not the overkill old money oh yeah this garish new money 21 times with a wealth whispers yeah money hammers you in the back of the head 21 times.

07But that's Yorkshire for you, I guess. Anyway, doesn't matter. Winnicott's really getting in the neck from us. Doesn't matter what side of politics you are, if you've got an annoying voice, people are going to hit you in the head. Anyway, 1939. Yeah. Okay. What a year. What a year. Let's just drink it in yeah uh hitler had spent years denouncing bolshevism you know this is in the 30s there are these two big figures right you know the two genders hitler or stalin who are you uh they're enemies and obviously they're all you know the hitler the war machine is building yeah the war machine stalin's war machine had been uh basically just collapsed by his own um well he'd killed all of his high command pretty much all sent them to the gulag

49yeah um so the red the great terror uh the hello to my beer had weakened the red army and in may 39 as europe is heading towards uh war star Stalin removes his foreign minister, Maxim Litvinov, who is a Jewish anti-Nazi. I mean, how important is the word anti-Nazi there? Jewish pro-Nazi. I want to meet that guy. Pro-Nazi Jew. He was removed and he was replaced with Vyacheslav Molotov, one of Stalin's most loyal lieutenants. He's played by Jeffrey Tambor in The Death of Stalin. Yes. And is that the Molotov cocktail guy or is that someone else? It was the Molotov cocktail, but he didn't invent the Molotov cocktail. He didn't? It was just some slightly boring reason. Yeah, I remember it being much disappointing.

41Because you're like, that guy. Really? He's doing diplomacy. The guy that shoves a fucking cum rag in a glass bottle. Who invented the Molotov cocktail? Oh, it's Spanish Civil War. Okay. From Finns. So maybe it was in response to the Ribbentrop-Molotov deal. Oh, it's during the Winter War, which we will deal with in this episode. So it's actually a Finnish invention. So Finns, they've not only invented just saunas. Saunas and the Molotov cocktail. They love heating things up. Yeah, it's all hot though, isn't it? Right? You knowas, saunas and the Molotov cocktail. They love heating things up. Yeah, it's all hot though, isn't it? Right? You know what I mean? I wouldn't say they're great. It's not like Scotland where it's the toilet and the telephone.

13You know? Yeah. Because I can enjoy both of those at once. Yeah, yeah. Two things that Charlie enjoys very a lot. A perfect Scottish Sunday, having a poo on your phone. Yeah, that's literally, yeah. Charlie, you were just on the phone now for 15 minutes. Who was you tell me oh yeah yeah i was yeah yeah i'm getting evicted out my house okay you can't deal with that now listen the not the molotov ribbon trot pact absolutely uh you know it surprises europe as you said it's it's much like the uh ben gavir milliband pact of the near future. It's shocking. Yeah. And when King Charles joined Hamas, you can't see this now. Was it Kefir? What's it called? Yeah, whatever. Not Kefir, but he's not got Yongon on his head.

55What are they called? Kefir? I don't know. Anyway, you know, this is the thing about history. In three years time, when we do an episode on when King Charles joined Hamas, it will all make sense. Yes. But now we're in the before times and it does not make sense how we got there. Also, will we just side point Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, is that the way around it is? Is a wonderfully sounding pact. They're two names together. Molotov-Ribbentrop. It just sounds great. Yes. There's a perfect two names together. I mean, that's the name of a band. Yeah. That's the name of a band yeah that's the name of a uh a drag queen yeah yeah also uh i don't know did you hear the news about the guy the pilot that tried to stab the other pilot oh i'm sorry i thought you were setting up a joke i

33thought it was like sorry i thought i thought you're doing like a street joke sorry no you don't mean the news about the israeli yes yeah yeah so what happened well well um it's suspected attempted jihad which is quite a funny crime to be. Attempted jihad. Attempted jihad is quite a good name. Autorotic jihad affixation. Quite a good name for a banned attempted jihad. Anyway, so negotiations between Hitler and Stalin begin in earnest in August 39. I mean, weeks before World War II kicks off. Stalin proposes to Joachim von Ribbentrop that he come to Moscow on the 26th of August, but Hitler is like, brother, I'm about to invade Poland, man. You know I did this earlier. So Hitler writes to Stalin

14being like, can he come earlier? But why are they setting up this meeting in the first place? Because they're both Because they're mortal enemies. Hitler's like, I'm going to go into Poland. I'm'm going to go into Poland. I'm also going to go into France. But I want to, you know. But Hitler starts the. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He sends the letter, right? Hitler starts everything. Right. Hitler's a doer, as we know. Yeah. Stalin is a pariah. You wouldn't have the Beatles without Hitler. Genuinely. You wouldn't. They wouldn't exist. So, you know. From Hitler to Yoko, the Beatles. Now, because Stalin had all been socialism in one country, Trotsky wanted a permanent global revolution. Stalin wanted socialism in one country. He'd been

57kind of inward-looking, navel-gazing, to put it mildly. So, he was a pariah, but yet Hitler starts addressing him as an equal. Stalin likes it. Stalin really likes it. He really likes it. And this is where, because Stalin, who's normally so good at one, reading people and politically maneuvering, it's surprising that he falls foul of his insecurities, right? Which is very rare of him. Or is he just, as everyone was, dazzled by the fuhrer's charisma well even in letter it's very easy for us to say now oh it's stalin's fault even hitler's coming onto you like this yeah he's a very strong man to resist but i've never seen stalin blush like this well that's what i mean he go he completely he goes weak at the knees yeah he really does so

41there's a bromance right so stalin Stalin replies immediately. Immediately. And he never does that shit. No, no, no. So basically Hitler's WhatsAppping him and Stalin's immediately replying. And then Hitler's like taking a week to reply. So Ribbentrop expects to negotiate with Molotov, but instead Stalin's there. I'll do it. Is Hitler coming? Oh, no, no, no. Okay, fine. All right, fine. No, no, no, you come. Was he excited? Of course he's excited. Yeah, cool. Just asking. He'd ironed his shirt. Okay. All right. Fine. No, no, no. You come. You come. Was he excited? Of course he's excited. Yeah, cool. Just asking. He'd ironed his shirt. Stalin's ironed his shirt. Stalin asked about Hitler. Was he wearing it?

11Was he asking about me? Yeah. What does he smell like? Ribbentrop proposes a hundred year non-aggression pact. Stalin's like, let's do 10. Right? 12:14Don't Miss Steps, coming November 20th, only on Netflix. Brooks Brothers. From the first day to graduation. From the interview to the big promotion. From the first day to graduation from the interview to the big promotion from the first date to saying i do quality tailoring that lasts a lifetime the 1818 collection italian crafted suiting for your important occasions explorer suit separates crafted from lightweight wool built for travel and ease bro Brooks Brothers, tailored for the moments that matter. Look, I'm excited. I'm as excited as you are, but let's put it back in. Let's be realistic, you know. So Germany and the Soviet Union basically divide Eastern Europe into spheres of influence.

57Now that is peak male experience. Yeah. Dividing a country on a map that isn't yours. And that's what our generation has been robbed of yes really but i just i this is when i can imagine if you're a woman this is what you describe as gender envy right this is like a peak male experience two people a country that isn't yours two people who are meant to be enemies set deciding who gets what like that is just that must be as good as it gets. Foreign countries bringing enemies together. Breaking bread over some other fucking random country's borders. But like a place you've never been and going, yeah, I'll have that. I'll have that bit. That river there, that side's mine, that side's yours. Oh, maybe I'll take a little bit of that,

36but you can have that. Do you want to have for a pint? Yeah. You know, it's male bonding. It's male bonding. This is fucking great. Dividing countries that aren't yours. Yeah. And so that's why, you know, the Israeli cabinet, they're all so matey at the moment. Yes, they are, aren't they? Because they're just going, what about that bit? Yeah. What's going on? To be fair, we gave Israel a hard time in our last episode, which I don't know if our sponsors, the IDF, will be a big fan of, and we apologize. I don't think we're ideologically compromised. I think we can be sponsored by the IDF and criticize their actions. I think they've not gone hard enough personally yes we still have the gofundme for the iron dome in the link below if i'm going to criticize the

13idf i say you could be doing a bit more personally that's what i think yeah yeah yeah but i yeah i think some of those babies are actually in hamas personally but that's my own position that baby's three days old all right why are you not shooting in the head why are you not shooting in the head it's three days old it's had three days to learn about Hamas yeah personally but listen that's my own opinion that's my own opinion I don't want to compromise the good work that the IDF do for us yes which is that they and if you leave the Falklands it's none of my business hey well listen leave the Falklands and I'll shut up you know the mayor of for i'm basically a puppet with the mayor of the forklift's hand on my ass uh charlie who's on the ground in the

53forklift's just come on who's on the ground who's the mayor who's the mayor of port stanley who's the guy in the forklift's come on uh who's hands up my ass basically making me squeal pull the bandaid off blind date Colin Martin Reynolds Colin Martin Reynolds would you stop fucking squeezing my prostate I mean that is an English name isn't it look at him Colin that's our last hope he's busy at the moment that cunt he's busy I trust Colin I mean his eyes are far apart mhm well he's he's being fucking attacked from both sides he's looking at Buenos Aires and Tel Aviv look at those eyes the axis of evil Buenos Aires and Tel Aviv anyway well he's got he's being fucking attacked from both sides he's looking at buenos aires and

25tel aviv look at those eyes the axis of evil buenos aires and tel aviv anyway now um the pact the nazi soviet pact recognizes that soviets have interests in finland and estonia and on the baltic and at this point finland uh includes the karelian Isthmus. Now, what's that? That's the bit of sort of like guff in between Petrograd and where Finland starts now. Because it's now Russian, but at this time it's Finnish. The Russian-Finnish border. Right. So that bit is now currently Russian, that little bit of land, yeah? Because St. Petersburg is just there. But at this point, that's Finnish. And Stalin wants it because he wants a buffer definitely and that's fair enough and so him and stalin and ribbentrop and molotov uh they agree you know the germans

14will have western poland and all that and then you know the caviar come out the vodka crimean sparkling wine yeah it feels like stalin's giggling more than he's ever giggled. He's not a giggly guy at this point. No, but he's blushing because it's Hitler. It's the Nazis. And, you know, he's also, he's included finally at the top table. Yes. You know? And that's all he's ever wanted. He just wants mates. Yeah. Right? And so he raises a glass and drinks to the Fuhrer's health. Yeah. Again, not something you can do nowadays. So is it Stalin going, I mean, that's a great moment. Yeah. Again, not something you can do nowadays. So is it Stalin going, HAL Hitler? I think so. That's a great moment. Yeah.

49What is it? Is there any way that he could have given Hitler the ick by overdoing the niceties? I think maybe that is what this story is about. You know, because Hitler invades ultimately because he's just, he's just a bitch. Hitler knew his plan all along, right? Yeah. This is all along. Yeah. Yeah. Hitler is like a cat playing with a mouse. Yeah. Yeah. Ball of string and Stalin's, road. Yeah, yeah. Hitler is like a cat playing with a mouse. Yeah. Ball of string and Stalin's go. Yeah. Because Stalin is the man of steel, but Hitler, I guess, is a fucking jet fuel. He's melting him. He's melting Stalin. Yeah. Stalin just collapses. Right, so Stalin is the Twin Towers North Tower South Tower and Hitler's George Bush

28right Hitler's George Bush there you go right so they're going to take photos of the pact but the table's covered with alcohol and Stalin goes Hitler won't like that he's teetotal yes get rid of that so they get rid of all the alcohol but also I think he also said do you want it to look like we just like divided Eastern Europe up on a piss up yeah yeah yeah so you get rid of all the alcohol, takes these stage photos. And now Hitler starts to become fascinated by Stalin. There is a bromance developing between these two figures. This rarefied air, there's not many other people you can compare yourself to. It's tough at the top. It's quite lonely. It's tough at the top, right? So he starts bombarding Hoffman, who's his aide or whatever, with questions.

04Did he give direct orders did he disguise them as requests what was his health like did he really smoke as much as you say what kind of handshake did he have uh he then starts ranking dictators as we're both prone to do he said well let's hit me first then style and then mussolini who's obviously just a little fucking dog that hums your leg i mean it's amazing that the ranking dictators was happening during the great age of the dictators it's not a preemptive thing this is happening right during it's very life it's like when jack the ripper became a tourist attraction the next day hitler is ranking his own dictators doing hitler's ranking hitler even he knew that this was the best time to be

40alive right hitler starts asking what stalin's earlobes look like yeah okay this is because you know again just it's always the like yeah one more question one more question yeah it's like okay hitler's been very cunning here and he's showing sides that he's a real great okay all right he's fucking off his rock he's completely lost so apparently attached earlobes are jewish and detached earlobes are aryan according to thebes are Aryan. According to the science of the time. I don't know what the difference is. Could you tell us what? Oh, is it this bit here? So are we Jewish or not? I'm not. I think you are. No. So the phrenology of the ear. Yeah. Great stuff. So this is that sort of like snap judgment phrenology right we

25don't need to get the calipers out pop quiz yeah yeah shoot from the hips Jewish yeah look at his earlobes um now Hoffman assures Hitler that Stalin's earlobes are detached he's like he's like thank god okay okay maybe I can okay um but Hitler did order that Stalin's cigarettes were re-touched out of the photos yes because stalin's bust into it like he loves cig so hitler was teetotal and didn't smoke i guess he's mad enough without the gear it's sort of the he's one of those women that doesn't do you know you're already a lot um so uh so hitler obviously goes into poland maybe like a week after this, 10 days. It's really quickly. And so when the Nazi Soviet Pact is signed, yeah, we can't stress how shattered,

11the whole world is like, oh, fuck. That's not meant to happen. Okay. We're in a bad spot here. How? I guess we have to join Hamas now. I mean, that's what Britain are thinking. Yeah. And then Poland, maybe a country's never been more fucked than Poland in the 40s. Yeah. There's an argument that it's the most fucked a country's ever been. Sure. Yeah, you're right. The two biggest, the biggest battle ever happens between two countries and you're sort of in the middle. No country's been Eiffel Towered worse. And there's all the concentration camps. Yeah, it's the worst place to be. Poland in the 40s is maybe the worst place to be. Yeah, I'd worst place to be poland in the 40s is maybe the worst place to be yeah i'd say that yeah yeah poland's voice meant to be very nice now i suppose

50yeah anyway so what stalin does in november 1939 is he goes right uh while hitler's going to poland i am going to go into finland because i want to try and secure my northern border because he does think at some point Hitler's going to attack. Right. So, yeah, this is, putting it in Falklands term, I can understand this. You do need to secure, this is the northern border. Yes. This is their northern Falklands. Exactly. Kind of thing. The Karelian Isthmus is the Soviet Falklands of the north. So, because the border currently is what's called leningrad now st petersburg um and there are naval bases in the gulf of finland so the red army stage a false flag they shell their own village mainila which is near the border uh and then they claim the attack came from the fins

43uh and do they actually cause casualties or from the finns uh and did they actually cause casualties or i guess maybe they all hit they wouldn't give a fuck yeah they don't care yeah um so then they cancel their own non-aggression pact with finland and begin the winter war they red army invade finland on the 30th of november 1939 now again they expect a very quick war the classic russian playbook yeah overestimate yourself stubborn resistance from the outliers of your own state yeah and then beat them in a really long ruling war yeah where you just kill a million of your own people yeah the classic so the red army suffer massive casualties because they didn't pack any fucking coats so they get russianed they get russians the finnish russian the russians

22because it's even colder in finland is it i don't know i don't know uh or maybe the fins have just are in saunas until they have to fight so they have the residual temperature sure anyway uh they also had killed all their generals yeah so they just charge with not enough gear and then the fins have these uh pretty sick ski troops yeah so they have uh james of James Bond ski troops They like Skiing and then ambushing with submachine guns. They use this is where the Molotov cocktail originates they shove cum rags in bottles of Wkd and then they set fire to them and chuck them and it's a bit Beethoven's brother, but they're like mmm Molotov's cool. Not that Molotov. Yeah, I see. But Finns, I mean,

08Finns are weird people. Yeah. Anyway, so. Single or a double, mate? Yeah, it's a bit. Yeah, it's a bit. Do you mind? Yeah. Yeah. Now, what we need to talk about, the main character in the Winter War is a man called simo how the fuck am i saying that sammy hopia what's his name he's a sort of middle middle-aged woman from the home counties well listen that's after he got shot in the face okay i mean mean that is talk about Beethoven's brother is that when he came out with Molotov's cocktail well of course no he's smug because he's the deadliest sniper in history 500 confirmed kills no he got shot in the face so that's why that's smugger than Beethoven's brother I've never I don't think I've seen

56a smugger face we might have just found one yeah well he got shot in the face so but yeah he's also the highest nice excuse mate highest confirmed kills in history as a sniper yeah but he could have just been saying got shot in the face. So, but yeah, he's also the... Nice excuse, mate. Highest confirmed kills in history as a sniper. Yeah, but he could have just been saying I got shot in the face. So how am I saying that? You pronounce... Higher. It is higher. Higher. Higher. So that's what he's saying as he shoots it. You're right. Higher. So this is a Finnish sniper sniper he was like a farmer he initially serves in the bicycle battalion but bicycles were scary back at this point because it was bicycles were bicycles were only invented like 30 years before so those were viewed as um

37early modernity and like those nazi bicycle battalions that were like terrifying it's only recently push bikes not not like yeah yeah yeah not motorbikes yeah bicycles wow there was it was they were seen as a terrifying industrial yeah yeah but it was only recently that the lycra dads have made them gay right okay look at this oh wow he's terrifying oh no the fucking tour de tour de fuck is coming towards me fuck yeah that's awesome imagine if you saw that in a cycle yeah yeah that'd be pretty good so anyway uh he hadn't received any formal sniper training but he was just a sort of just kind of natural crack shot so in a hundred days he has 500 confirmed kills wow and this is in a bear mind it's winter in finland so there's maybe four hours of daylight or something.

25Yeah. In one day, he killed 25 confirmed. So these don't even count when everyone shoots at the same person. They're not even shooting at that. This is Call of Duty numbers, basically. He's basically just playing a video game. Yeah. Right. And the way he did it, right. Shoot them in the head? Well, yes. No, so what he, this is the highest number of sniper kills in any major war ever. So what he did was that he he took his scope off right because the sun would bounce off so they could see yeah you seen Enemy at the Gates well I've played lots of video games where you get told have you seen Enemy at the Gates no oh I see it again you not seen Enemy at the Gates no about the sniper duel in Stalingrad

02there's a bit made up oh oh it's a good film you'd like that come on watch it come on oh is it the guy with the big long face Jude Law and Ed Harris yes I've seen clips on TikTok and Rachel Weisz yeah don't really know why she's there but anyway so what he did is he took great film he took the most thin film I've ever seen it's a great film all right it's not over the hedge what's over the hedge you know about over there oh fuck off over the hedge enemy of the gates right so they're similar films actually he takes he takes the sight off because it dazzles in the sun gives him away he he puts snow in his mouth so that there's no um steam or condensation from when he breathed right so he cools his breath down and then he also puts snow around the in front of pound of snow in front of

51the turret of the gun so there's no smoke so he gets called the is he called the ghost no he goes called the white death right because he's just completely white hidden and he's just shooting you from from nowhere it seems wow Soviet troops hadn't been issued camouflage so they basically were sitting ducks he gets sniped in the face by another sniper yeah so eventually he gets shot in the face and survives a bit of his jaw comes off March the 6th 1940 he survives and woke from a coma and then goes back to being a farmer and a dog breeder wow died aged 96. 96, what a life. Amazing, isn't it? Also, the 500 confirmed kills don't even count. He also led a battalion with a submachine gun and just fucked up 200 people.

36So, I mean, he saw 9-11. Yeah. On telly. See, the second plane just hit have you seen the footage of Ronaldo seeing 9-11 which Ronaldo Cristiano Ronaldo no oh my god have you not you've seen this have you not seen this there's footage of Ronaldo seeing 9-11 for the first time look at this look look look this is sort of ah what oh this is how you're at look first time. This is what this is how you're at. I don't think he's I don't think he's reacted enough there yeah aye ah ooh it's like watching someone get hit in the balls ooh I mean he must be like like 15 then ooh that's gonna hurt yeah but he's a Portuguese footballer he's 15 he's not gonna understand the geopolitical ramifications of 9-11

38no no no he was much sweeter ooh sometimes you gotta hit it with the Ronaldo react to 9-11 ooh gonna bring that into the repertoire knuckleball that second play that second play was a knuckleball Sometimes you've got to hit it with the Ronaldo react to 9-11. I'm going to bring that into the repertoire. Knuckleball. That second play was a knuckleball, wasn't it? Oh! Aye! Right. So March the 13th, 1940, okay, the USSR have taken back pretty much, or they've taken the territory they wanted to i think through sheer numbers right obviously how many people yeah they run on paper but suffered 300 000 casualties uh 25 000 finns were dead um and so finland loses about 10 of its land and has to lease the peninsula out anyway so do they make a deal yeah they cut a deal right um

26but this you know it's a heavy cost for star wars military goals now hitler sees this and it's like fuck they can't even beat the fins right without losing that many so but was he was planning this all along though now okay he was planning what we don't know. Do we know? No. What he wants to do, obviously, we know this. This is the gospel. This is the dad gospel, right? Hold on to your prayer beads, whatever they are. Yes, Lord. Yeah. Hitler goes west, okay? Strikes, takes out the low countries. He wants to knock Britain out of the war, right? He wants Britain to come to the table. Come to the table, knock them out of the war. He wants to come to the table. Come to the table, knock them out of the war

07so that he can then go east. He wants to invade Russia in sort of 43. Right? That's always the plan. Right. But he can't knock Britain out because we stand alone. As we will do when Ben Gavir and Ed Miliband... No. Ben Gavir and Javier Millet. As. Ben Gavir and Javier Millet. When Ben Gavir and Javier Millet invade the Falklands once again, in fact, we won't stand alone because we'll have our friends Hamas by our side. Our good friends Hamas. Hamas, actually. Hamas, actually. Those Falklands are ours. Hamas, actually, those Falklands are ours. Right. So, he wants to invade in 43, I'm not actually, those hawkins are ours. Right. So, he wants to invade in 43, but Britain stands alone. He can't knock them out of the war.

55And then he sees Stalin basically fuck it in Finland and goes, the Red Army are crap. Right. Let's just fucking go for it. Because Hitler is a gambler. He's impulsive. He is impulsive. He has poor impulse control because he had ADHD, as we know. He did. He did have poor impulse control because he had adhd as we know he did he didn't have poor impulse control yeah which is why you know he probably was a teetotaler he's an ideas guy because you know how people with adhd are more prone to alcoholism because it's a dopamine hit right yeah always searching dopamine hits so it's probably he was always looking for dopamine that's what he needed he's taking meth all the time he's just any bigger dopamine hit than invading russia

26this really makes me empathize with hitler well exactly i don't understand it it's just what's next what's next the next thing next next need a new thing yeah so by 1941 again there are massive warnings of a german invasion uh because troops were accumulating along the border but Stalin is this is the weakest Stalin is cunt struck he's cunt struck but this is so unlike Stalin nothing in his past his history before or since has ever been like this he plays these games he doesn't get played like this and it's like his generals are coming saying Hitler's going to invade and he's like nah I know Hitler Hitler's are coming saying like Hitler's going to invade and he's like nah I know Hitler Hitler's not coming

07I know Hitler he wouldn't he wouldn't do that to me he wouldn't we signed a pact we're best mates does the Ribbentrop want a pact not mean anything to Hitler I mean we're mates but they're like was he even there no but he was busy you wouldn't get it he wouldn't get it you don't understand what it's like to be a top leader it's stressful we and him are bros we get it you You wouldn't get it. You don't understand what it's like to be a top leader. It's stressful. Me and him are bros. We get it. You don't know him like I do. So he, yeah, he thinks it's British disinformation. He's got spies everywhere. And they're saying, I reckon that someone's coming, mate. And he's like, no, So in June 1941, Germany launches Operation Barbarossa.

45It is the biggest land invasion in human history. Biggest battle ever. Fucking get your balls out and smash them with a hammer. And whitticam your balls, right? Here we go. 3.8 million Axis troops cross over across the entire Soviet border, right this is nearly 3 000 kilometers baltic to the black sea to be fair you should notice that as a build-up from the baltic to the black sea soviet will be free yeah three and a half thousand you should notice that you should notice that on your border yeah that amount of people four million people starling starling he's gonna bet no he's not he's not they're just they're hanging out it's an exercise it's a military exercise he's just gonna he's got to keep your troops somewhere yeah where else is he gonna put the others gonna put

32them it's not as if he controls the entirety of europe so for a comparison napoleon's invasion of the big army the big army 600 000000 that was nothing fuck off nothing nothing right and that was that was the big army what's the second biggest evasion is it Napoleon no it's got to be or World War 2 it's got to be something else from World War 2 I guess obviously you can't understand history without ranking so I guess let's rank it quickly so you can move let's rank it let's jackmate it yeah jackmate operate D-Day is next what's that a million so like it's it's nothing nothing comes even close then it's Desert Storm Let's Jackmate it. Yeah. Jackmate. Operate D-Day is next. What's that? A million.

07So like it's... It's nothing. Nothing comes even close. Then it's Desert Storm. Just completely deflated. Fucking hell. So, yeah. Nearly four million men, right, go over the border now. Stalin, again, this is very unlike him. This is the hinge point of his kind of whole kind of life and career in many ways, is this two weeks here. This is the deciding point whether he's going to crumble or become the Stalin we know and love. Because he just goes to his DACA, his little country residence. He just goes, he just misses. Stalin's just like this. Can you get the photo up of Stalin when he hears about the Nazi invasion? Really? We've got like a George Bush 9-11 photo. It's an amazing photo. The morning of the,

58when the troops crossed the border and immediately the troops crossed the border and I mean, they advanced so quickly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Here it is. Look at this. Zoom in. This is such. Oh, my God. Isn't that such a male photo? Wow. She's taking the kids. Oh, my God. That's the exact photo. Let me go. I'm going to send you a photo of me. She's taking the kids. Okay. Charlie, this is on WhatsApp. I've got this as a GIF because it sums up me at my lowest. So I've just sent you a sticker I made. So this was my sort of Stalin moment. Can you get this up? See that down there? So what that is, yeah, this is genuine photo taken of me. This is when me and Andrew did content for Lad Bible. I remember you.

38Yeah, and this is in Birmingham. It was a line dancing thing. We got paid £1,500 each, even though there was about a crew of like 30 people. We should we got paid a thousand five hundred pounds at each even though there was about a crew of like 30 people we should have been paid a lot more um didn't spend much on the costume did they yeah it was um one of the most humiliating days of my life it was like a real like the stuff so we were taught how to find it find the advert i tried it's gone is it i don't know if it's yeah i watched it i was the only I was the only one who watched it. I watched it. Did you watch it? Did you see the line dancing? Yeah. Yeah. And there was just a moment when they're telling us what to do

10and I'm sat like, and so that's my, and it's, if you look, can you put it side by side with Stalin, please? Can you put it, can you get the Stalin photo? So it's a, you know, it's a very male experience. Very male experience. Why do, i can't believe i didn't see this coming yeah and i needed you know i needed 20 minutes before i you know i did my duty and and completed the lad bible content because that's your bible yeah so starting he fucks off for two weeks and just all the and in this two weeks this is like a disaster i mean the germans are advancing so quickly uh they reach smolensk by august which is which is now belarus but it's very very short distance to moscow stalin basically cannot

01believe it he can't believe it because he's he's basically been betrayed yeah 10th of July in a month fuck so in a month they go to they get to Smolensk right and so Stalin is just I can't believe it I need I need some time the I can't believe he did that to me oh fuck I can't believe you've done this he just went non-verbal completely he just went to his DACA and just I don't know what to. I don't know who I am anymore. Yeah. I can't, you know, he's been, he's been pumped and dumped basically. Yeah. Hitler's led him on. His whole world's collapsed. Yeah. He can't, I mean, he really can't get his head around. No. It's like, even Hitler, Hitler invades me. is betraying me. Then who else is going to betray?

41If someone is trustworthy, As Adolf Hitler. If someone, a stand up guy, as Adolf adult hitler is gonna turn to me then how can i trust anyone i don't know i'm gonna love again yeah well then anyone could invade me yeah adolf hitler's invaded me so uh he's in a circle of like uh um shit mate are you gonna do anything so then eventually they arrive and he's like he thinks they're going to come and arrest him because his head's gone his head's on the floor is it sort of like when your mum comes in and you're ill knocking on the door are you okay just a little a million people are dying can you do something so he then is like they're like we need you like we want dad back no one needs me no dad

24clearly not dad we're nothing without you want dad back no one needs me no dad no no no no dad we're nothing without you i don't i how do i trust anyone needs me yeah yeah so um self-pity is not a good look on anyone no especially not on joseph starling i tell you what i you know i i'm i'm a big against self-pity but he takes two weeks of self-pity and it doesn't happen again yeah you know what i mean well yeah he uh he sucks up he sucks it up and eventually and and so sir anthony beaver friend of the pod right the beaver the beaver muncher himself he said he said that if they'd wait if he'd waited two or three more days yeah it it could all could have been lost right because the germans were advancing so quickly. However, James Holland, yeah,

05the guy who wants to turn World War II into a massive MOT report, he says that Barbarossa... The guy who only knows about World War II so much so he doesn't even know about World War I. Yeah, World War I. World War I's gay. All I know is World War II. I don't know how to have sex with my wife or talk to anyone. I just know about World War II. I don't know exactly how many planes were involved in each battle. Thank you. Thank you. He says that when you're dealing with military history there are three things the strategy operational and tactical so strategy is like we're going to invade russia operational is how we're going like the logistics and the amount of weapons and then the tanks and how you're

41going to supply people and tactical is like the actual battles themselves is it zooming out yeah yeah right so he says that basically barb russell was doomed to fail because they fucked the operational he just wanted to do it but it was impossible to supply that amount of people for that long so was it was any of those three successful was it strategically the right move uh well no operationally was the wrong move and it was tactically the wrong move like was it well tactically it worked quite well right on the ground for the first few months but operationally the strategy it was doomed because he could not supply he couldn't supply that many people onions yeah onions again yeah onions invade russia without

So, Stalin eventually snaps out of it and then then he's like right sorry about that i'm really embarrassed i'm really embarrassed i'm sorry i'm back now i'm back i'm here um now

54because he's been sulking he was heartbroken he was genuinely heartbroken construct right because he'd been sulking he then is like right i'm gonna have to take command of this yeah and and this is actually a problem because he's not you know he's not actually that good at this is the dictator's tragic flaws this is the great and and one of the great um intersecting narratives of this story is that while stalin uh refuses to delegate early on and the war's going badly he learns to trust his generals at the same time that hitler starts to distrust his and becomes more micromanaging and this is the great story it's a victory against micromanagement world war ii is all about micromanagement yeah yeah that's what wins and

38loses it yeah right how much can you delegate yeah the allies can delegate and hitler to you know to his fault um not a perfect man by any chance but um he backs he drives add that to his list of crimes um uh stalin basically because he also killed all the generals in the purge he tries to get them back from the gulag and return them um a lot of them are in wheelchairs yeah and i'm a bit miffed i'd say yeah i would be i'd feel yeah i'll deal with this but do, I'd say. Yeah. I'd feel a bit. Yeah, I'll deal with this. But do you want to say sorry at least? I'm in a wheelchair. So he says, right, armies don't retreat. Don't allow anyone to retreat. But this is a disaster because in September 41,

17the invasion reaches Kiev, which is like probably the second city of the Soviet Union, maybe the third. It's huge, right? Because Stalin has said, don't move back. Now his general or field marshal Zhukov is saying, we've got to fall back behind the Dnieper River because that would be quite hard for them to cross. But Stalin says, no retreat. And then, so they get encircled and 665,000 Red Army soldiers are taken prisoner. Four field armies are destroyed. Yeah, so... All because Stalin went, don't fall back. Yeah. Right, and then Zhukov goes, well, I resign. Because if you don't let me do my job, if you don't trust me to do my job, then I'm not going to work here anymore. Yeah. Micromanaging.

01Exactly. There's then the Babinyar... No, but he when he's he redesigns and then what does Stalin concede then not yet because he doesn't does he actually take some time out and then he gets called back in so there's then the Babin Yar massacre right which is following I don't know about this following controlled explosions set off by retreating Soviet forces that killed German troops the Nazis used the sabotage as a pretext to murder 34,000 Jewish residents of Kiev. Well, yeah. I mean, do they need a pretext? Yeah. Also, you try to shock me. It's like, they killed six million in the camp. It's like, oh my God, I can't believe they did that. The Babin Yar massacre. Yeah. Oh. And he was a micromanager.

42Yeah. I mean, you know, this guy. Nazis going Nazi. Yeah. So, what have you found micromanager. Yeah. I mean, you know, this guy. Nazis going Nazi. Yeah. So what have you found, Charlie? Anti-tank dogs. Yeah, I'm just thinking if any animals killed any people in Barbarossa. Apparently anti-tank dogs trained by Russia were meant to smell diesel fuel and run towards it. But then German tanks smelt of gasoline instead. So they ran back to their trenches and killed their own handlers. Do they have bombs on them? It's like war pigs, but it's war dogs, basically. A lever on the dog's vest. Fuck, they're Jihadi dogs. Yeah, they're Jihadi dogs, but it's like a Frisbee. If you've got a grenade on a Frisbee

16and you chuck it and it comes right back at you. I would not trust my dog to Jihadi. My dog is so needy. It's a therapy dog. It's always by my feet jihadi dogs yeah christ they're not ideologically strong enough no they're not they're weak oh no so uh it's all going very badly right starlin's micromanaging now by 1942 uh the german invasion is as thus. You have Army Group North going towards Petrograd, Army Group Centre going towards Moscow, Army Group South going towards the Caucasus. Yeah. I like that. Strategically, that's fine. I get that. Yeah. He wants to go, Army Group South meant to capture the oil fields of the Caucasus. That's because it's all about oil supply lines. Operational. Yeah.

04And arguably, was that one of the key reasons he invades as well? But the winter basically stops, you know, because they don't have, where are they getting their oil from? Exactly. Because Britain controls Iran. Yeah. And that's, we're getting all the Iranian, the Abadan oil fields. Yeah. So the winter, because the Russians, they're a bit of his brother with this. They go, you know, the strongest generals in the Russian army, general January and general February. That's what they say, right? That's what Beaver said. Yeah. And he was laughing. He must have said that a thousand times. He still finds it funny. But he's a knight of the realm, actually. You cannot undermine that, you know, Beethoven's brother's smugness can be incredibly morale boosting.

44Yes, you're right. Because you can spread it. You tell one person, someone goes, it's like when a dad hears another dad joke, and he goes, hang on. Fuck, it's a smugness can be incredibly morale boosting. Yes, you're right. Because you can spread it. You tell one person, someone goes, it's like when a dad hears another dad joke and he goes, hang on. Fuck, it's a sniper. Oh, right. I'm sorry. Yeah, it is. You're right. A dad hears, when you can see when a dad finds a new dad joke, he goes, that's pretty funny. That's pretty good. And he doesn't say another thing. He just thinks, I'm going to, as soon as you've left the room. I'm going to use that one. And it's locked in. Have you heard who's coming?

09General Daniel and General Frippery. Pretty sure we're going to be all right, boys. So they basically, they get to Smolensk in a month and then it all starts to break down because of this snow. So they are going towards the Caucasus oil fields. They get to Stalingrad by the summer of 42 now this is not really of much strategic importance. When did they reach Moscow? I believe they reached Moscow just before Stalingrad they never get to Moscow. They stop 60 miles outside of Moscow because of the snow but it's interesting that they choose they could have put all of them, Stalingrad could have been in Moscow right? Totally and I guess They could have put all of the... Stalingrad could have been in Moscow, right? Totally, totally.

46And I guess you have the tactical thing of the oil fields, but it's actually the ego of the name. It grinds to a halt in December, the advance on Moscow. So they basically go like 300 miles... They're close. They're really close. They go 300 miles in about a month and then they only advance maybe another 60 after that. They're 12 miles outside of Moscow and they decide to divert and go to stalingrad they're permanently halted well well then then the army group decision though it is decision yeah it's a decision to stop and then arm group south is like we need more oil so they get to stalingrad now uh again yeah it's basically hitler's like we can't i now i don't know how or why but it becomes clear they're not going to get to the Caucasus oil fields.

26So Hitler's like, well, let's take Stalingrad because that'll be like an ersatz victory because it's named after Stalin. And that'll be like, you know, that'll be something. Yeah, it's massive. Right. That'll be anti-smug brigade. That'll try and, you know, reshape their joint. More like Hitlergrade. Yeah, fight smugness with smugness. Hitlergrade, I think. More like.grade. Yeah, fight smugglers with smugglers. Hitlergrad, I think. What is it? If they had taken Stalingrad, obviously it's kind of now stupid that he went for it because of the name. But if he had got it... Would he have called it Hitlergrad? The truth is, they could have won the war. They could have got Russia to the table, but Russia would have retreated.

04They wouldn't have won the war. Yeah, I don't think. But Russia would be very upset about that, wouldn't they? I mean, Stalin would be another photo of him in a cowboy hat. Taking Stalin ground. Line dancing in Birmingham. What the fuck am I doing? I've got tassels on my waistcoat. £1,500 for this. Wearing my own clothes and just a cheap cowboy hat. It's not even a good costume. My kids are going to see this at some point. They're not going to respect me you did that at 1500 pounds dad fucking hell have you ever done an advert that brought you to tears I didn't cry it was worse than crying yeah there's a more manly thing where you're past crying yeah you're just there I don't think Stalin didn't cry

42it was just it was nothing empty it's numb. Yeah. I've done jobs. I've not done adverts. I've done a, I tried to leave a job. I was doing the warmup for Celebrity Tipping Point. Right. I like Tipping Point. Yeah. Do you like Celebrity Tipping Point? No. No. And I wasn't, the gay, if you don't know, this is like a game show where it's the same as the penny machines in the arcade, but you can't mention that this is like a game show where it's the same as the penny machines in the arcade, but you can't mention that for legal reasons because it's a swindle because it's IP or something. I don't know. And then I also couldn't endorse gambling, but they went out, they went out and said, that's the one thing I endorse.

19Well, I can't, I can't talk about the Nazis and I can't endorse gambling, but they said like, make people excited about the show and the mechanics of the game, but don't mention the 2P machines or endorse gambling. So you go, right. Bitcoins are going to drop and it's going to be really fun. And Chris Camara might win some money for a charity of his choice. So that was your Stalin grad? My Stalin grad. And I tried to retreat and they wouldn't let me. They gave me an order saying, a directive saying, no one steps back from here. But when he was on the edge of Moscow, was that another halt order? Would you say that's a, a mirror's potentially done? I don't, it does, but I don't think it's a halt order.

52I think they just completely ground to a halt because they, they run out of fuel. They also, and this is, this is James Holland stuff. Go on. The, the railway gauges in the Soviet Union are like two inches wider than Nazi ones, the German ones, right? So, when they seize the railway lines in order to supply the advance forward, they have to push in every piece of railway by that much. Oh, that's, yeah. It's annoying. Like, for hundreds of miles. Yeah, it's really annoying. I mean, really annoying. Yeah. And then also, when Russia wins the war they have to go back and do it again I mean it's a nightmare I mean it's the cost of war isn't it it's just some poor cunts who have to go the hidden cost

32yeah exactly what's that Charlie what have you found so there's a Stalin sex position oh god read out from a woman's perspective whilst having oral sex performed on her the other player would resemble Stalin because of her big bush big bush looked Big bush, looked like a moustache. She's got to have a big growler for that to work. That's key context. It's got to have so much of a growler that you push the growler up onto your top lip. So it's actually going to be pretty dense down there. And I'm looking like Stalin in those two weeks down there. Just staring into the abyss. And if you've got a really, really, really thick brazilian you can do in a personation of hitler yeah on that down there for two weeks miserable

10shocked i'm doing the bunker scene down there but that's how that's how my wife likes it all right you know some people spell the alphabet i spell the hit people spell the alphabet. I spell the Hitler. Do you want to read that, Horatio? Okay, love. Before we get down to a bit of the old heavy, I thought... Heave-ho. I thought I'd just nip downstairs and do a quick impersonation of Stalin just to say I love you. By the gender terrorist. Right. Scum. Right, okay. Deserves it. Come on come on prostitute right july 42 stalin issues order 227 no one leave basically being like stalingrad we're not leaving this town yeah now the germans the luftwaffe and the luft flotter luft flotter they They fly over Stalingrad on whatever morning it is.

08And they do a thousand sorties in a day. And they kill 40,000 civilians in one day. I think until Hiroshima, or maybe until Hamburg or whatever, it's the biggest bombing ever. It's awful. No, until Hiroshima, it's the most amount of civilians to die in an air raid. So they reduced the city to rubble. The Volga River that runs through it has now got covered in oil, which is on fire for eternity, it seems. Right. So there's black smoke everywhere. The river's on fire. The city's just rubble. Russia's like... this is the best place I've ever seen. This is like a tourist destination now yeah russian disneyland right but again if you completely bomb a city to shit then you basically make it really easy

56to defend because there's no roads ruins ruins yeah it basically makes into a massive like paintball arena right like laser quest thing right so the russians it's very you can't drive tanks into it and the fighting basically becomes you know they go in the sewers it's in basements it's room to room street to street knives fucking bayonets and it's in the it's we're gonna go blow for blow we need to save our powder yeah but fundamentally biggest battle ever that's all you need to know million people die million people in one battle come on biggest battle ever anyway we'll skip through a lot of this but then what stalin realizes this is the great hinge point hitler goes there's a point where there's a point where stalin goes i'm fucking this

39right you during stalin yeah zhukov you do it which lasts about a year the actual six seven months right zhukov's like you do it right zhukov and another guy come up with this plan to encircle uh the nazis because the nazis have taken maybe 90 of the city and there's one like oil factory where the soviets are holding out right what zhukov says is we're going to encircle with all our ski troops we're going to hide a huge encirclement, a million troops gather on the steppe, and we're going to encircle the 6th Army. So rather than invade, we're going to go around them. And somehow they managed to disguise this from the Luftwaffe in the skies. And this is Operation Uranus. And then they trap them.

20So that's an entire field army, the 6th Army, encircled. And then rather than... There's a chance field army, the sixth army, are encircled. And then rather than, there's a chance, Paulus, the general has to retreat, but he goes, he asks permission from Hitler and Hitler says, no, you don't retreat. We're going to resupply you by air. Right? Goering says, yeah, we'll resupply you. And then obviously they can't because that's mad. Yeah. Because you'd have to do Conditions are terrible. Hundreds of tons of food a day because 600,000 men. Anyway. Dropping meal deals in the fucking snow not gonna happen mate not gonna happen um so essentially the story is is that hitler micromanagers stalin delegates and the germans surrender february 2nd 1943

57or is it two no it must be three it's definitely three uh 2nd the Germans surrender February 2nd 1943 and basically even at the time people are like the war's going our way now the Nazis can be defeated this is the basically well this is the hinge point of the whole war yeah until then it's just been hit as much as we like to say it's North Africa it is Stalingrad Stalingrad is probably second to North Africa I'd say until this point it's all the Germans winning apart apart of north africa and then after this it's just germans to be uh retreating right that's the big quote so uh stalin uh operation uranus is a massive victory now let's talk about tehran because this beaver right sir beaver muncher

42uh he says that tehran in 43, which is the first conference between Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill, that's the first time that Russia is a superpower. He says that's the moment. Because of Stalingrad, because of the defeat, Stalin's now there being like, I did this. I'm winning the war. But they've all, yeah, all three, and to be fair to him, all three of them have fought very different wars. That's what Churchill said. Fair play, bro. Fair play. Million men, biggest battle ever. I'll just shake your hand. Fair fucks, mate. Fair fucks. And so, we'll get to the conferences in our next episode. But the tide of the, and so we'll get to the conferences in our next episode but the tide of the the tide of the war

30has turned Stalin he had a big old grump but he's got his head back in the game he did get it back he got it back this is like you know this is he Jake Humphrey'd it he's out of control Jake Humphrey's out of fucking control this is like Davina McCall fucking hell this is Stalin Stalin basically listened to the High Performance Podcast out of control. Jake Humphries, out of fucking control. This is like, Davina McCall podcast. Fucking hell. This is Stalin, Stalin basically listened to the High Performance podcast. Yeah. And he listened to, you know, Jake Humphries. And the specky twat next to him. Don't raise him. Who's he? Jake Humphries has a guy who's really specky to make him look even better.

59Right. Because you think Jake Humphries is a bit of a wet nerd. Then you see this guy, like actually, Humphries is a fucking alpha next to that guy. That it's okay to be an introvert in a world that celebrates extroverts. And there'll be people that watch this video thinking, hold on, I know you. You are not an introvert. Yeah.
