Why did New World silver hurt Spain's economy, according to Si Sheppard?

Answered from Si Sheppard – How did a few hundred Spanish soldiers topple two empires? · Dwarkesh Podcast · 2026-10-01

Si Sheppard says the silver pouring in, much of it from Potosí in what is now Bolivia, mainly imported inflation into Spain, pushing up prices of staple goods so that real wages fell. Easy silver also meant Spain never built capital markets or independent banking like the Netherlands and England, and Sheppard says Spain stayed comparatively rural and poor into the 20th century. Dwarkesh Patel adds that much of the silver went to Ming China in exchange for porcelain, silk and other goods.
