Question

Who is Joe Murphy and why did he investigate Jay Hickey's disappearance?

Answered from A Private Matter, Episode 3 · Bear Brook · 2026-10-28

Joe Murphy is a retired social worker and former cop from Deerfield, New Hampshire, with stints in military police, the NYPD and the VA's police force. He barely knew Jay Hickey, but as a Boston University graduate student in the 1970s he studied under Jay's grandmother Isabel Hickey and stayed loyal to her. Amy Shapiro told him Jay was missing, and, doubting the local police, he started his own inquiry.
