Question

What red flags did Amy Shapiro find after Jay Hickey went missing?

Answered from A Private Matter, Episode 3 · Bear Brook · 2026-10-28

Amy Shapiro, who co-wrote the book Nevermind with Jay Hickey and sent him yearly royalties, found three things. Patty emailed her in October 2023 that Jay had memory trouble and was visiting high school friends in Massachusetts, when he was likely already missing. Her January 2024 royalty check for $134 was deposited with no signature on the back. Months later, near Christmas, she got casual texts from Jay's phone that she believed Patty wrote.
