Why does Dylan Field say AI is not raising the creative ceiling?

Answered from Dylan Field: Is AI Replacing Designers?, Design is the New Code & Democratizing Creativity · All-In with Chamath, Jason, Sacks & Friedberg · 2026-10-19

Dylan Field said he once predicted, at Figma's Config user conference a few years ago, that AI would raise the ceiling of what people can make, and that he was wrong. AI lowers the floor so anyone can produce code, video, motion or design, but it gravitates to an average result. The ceiling only rises when designers and other creatives choose to invest time and try something no one has done before.

▸In their words

“The ceiling has stayed the same. AI is not raising the ceiling. Humans are raising the ceiling though.” Dylan Field · at 20:46 — open in the transcript →
