Question

How did Tiberius Gracchus bring political violence to the Roman Republic?

Answered from #353 Dr. Thomas Madden - Rome Historian Reveals the 7 Warning Signs of a Dying Republic · The Shawn Ryan Show · 2026-11-02

Thomas Madden describes Tiberius Gracchus as Rome's original populist. Gracchus proposed breaking up public land held by wealthy Romans into plots of two to three acres for poor citizens, took the bill straight to the Council of the Plebs without the Senate, and had a tribune who vetoed it voted out. When he sought a second term, senators came out of the Senate and clubbed him to death, the first political bloodshed among Roman officeholders.
