Question

How did Marius's army reforms help end the Roman Republic, according to Thomas Madden?

Answered from #353 Dr. Thomas Madden - Rome Historian Reveals the 7 Warning Signs of a Dying Republic · The Shawn Ryan Show · 2026-11-02

Thomas Madden said Marius replaced Rome's citizen militia with a paid professional army. Because the generals were also politicians, soldiers tied their pay, postings and plunder to their commander, and their loyalty shifted from the constitution to the general. That let Sulla march his legions on Rome, which Madden treats as the point around 80 BC when the Republic was effectively finished, before Octavian won full control by 27 BC.
