Question

How did Lyndon Johnson get the Civil Rights Act of 1957 through the Senate?

Answered from What I learned about power from LBJ and Robert Moses · Dwarkesh Podcast · 2026-10-29

According to Patel, Johnson needed some civil rights bill to have any chance at the 1960 Democratic nomination. Over seven months he assembled unrelated factions: Western senators got a vote on an Idaho-Oregon dam, Midwestern Republicans got jury trials for striking workers, and moderates got a guarantee that Black citizens could serve on federal juries. Jury trials for Southern election officials stayed in, keeping the bill weak enough to avoid a filibuster.
