In February 2026, almost two years after Jay Hickey was reported missing, Patty Hickey called Kathy O'Mara, the family's former babysitter. According to Kathy's handwritten notes, Patty said Jay had wandered off, that she found him dead near an old stone foundation a few hundred feet from the house, and that it was a private matter. Kathy reported the call to police, who obtained a search warrant the next day.
