Question

Why does Chamath Palihapitiya say AI companies are competing with US Treasuries?

Answered from Anthropic S-1 Shocker, Greatest Business Ever? Google's $500B Wipeout, Midterm Predictions · All-In with Chamath, Jason, Sacks & Friedberg · 2026-10-30

Chamath Palihapitiya said the big AI spenders have drained cash and turned to debt, so the AI complex now owes about $340 to $400 billion. Their borrowing needs through the end of 2027 equal about 30% of what the US Treasury plans to issue. Either AI firms pay higher rates, which pulls forward defaults across neoclouds, or the Treasury pays more, which raises borrowing costs across the economy. He called this a systemic risk he had not seen since the 2008 financial crisis.
