Question

Why does Heather Cox Richardson say today's Democrats are to the right of Eisenhower?

Answered from Pivot Extra: America at 250 — with Heather Cox Richardson · Pivot · 2026-10-18

Asked whether voters swing hard left after periods like this, Heather Cox Richardson said even progressive Democrats are extraordinarily centrist, most of them to the right of Republican Dwight Eisenhower, who kept a top tax bracket of 91 or 92 percent and called for universal health care. She expects a backlash the right will call leftist, as FDR's was in 1933, but which she sees as an effort to preserve democracy and capitalism.
