Question

What did Peter Higgs say when the Higgs boson was confirmed, as Victoria Martin recalls?

Answered from Particle Accelerators · In Our Time · 2026-10-22

Victoria Martin, who took final-year undergraduate classes with Peter Higgs in Edinburgh, says he was given a reserved seat at the packed CERN seminar on 4 July 2012. Asked for a few words afterwards, alongside François Englert, he compared it to watching his football team win the league. Martin, who spoke to him by phone that day, says he seemed overwhelmed and kept reminding people the result took 48 years of collective work.
