What caused the high-speed train crash south of Madrid that killed at least 69 people?

Answered from Venezuelan opposition leader criticises US oil deal · Global News Podcast · 2026-10-30

Spain's transport minister has blamed human error for the crash, in which a train travelling at almost 200 km/h ploughed into a stationary train south of Madrid, killing at least 69 people. Sarah Rainsford reports that leaked audio shows a computer failure had stopped several trains, a controller cleared the Renfe driver to resume at normal speed, and the Iryo driver ahead near Urda had reported her train would not move, suggesting the line was known to be blocked five minutes before the collision.
