In late June 2019, after Brandon's grandfather died, Melanie told him God had revealed that he was gay and that they needed a divorce. She also accused him of hacking her Aunt Lori's computer, which he denied. Friends and family found the claim unbelievable, and Brandon came to see it as the same pattern Charles Vallow had faced with Lori since January.
