How does Steve Huynh apply Amazon's working-backwards method to an engineering career?

Steve Huynh, a former Amazon principal engineer, says to pick a precise career destination and then repeatedly ask what must be true before it, until the chain ends in a task you can start this quarter. Amazon uses the same reverse planning for products; Huynh applies it to promotions.

• For staff engineer, his chain runs: lead cross-team initiatives, build influence beyond your team, write design docs other teams use, research what would be impactful.
• His first concrete step is studying influential documents colleagues wrote and asking the authors how they approached them.
